Volvo XC40 Wins 2018 European Car of the Year

The DriveDen blog provides advice, news and reviews. This news article discusses the results of the prestigious 2018 European Car of the Year award.

The 2018 European Car of the Year award has been announced on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show and the winner by a huge margin was the Volvo XC40. The stylish new SUV received 325 points from the judges, finishing a huge 83 points ahead of the new Seat Ibiza (242 points) and the BMW 5 Series (226). Other nominees were the Kia Stinger, Citroen C3 Aircross, Audi A8 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

60 judges, spread across 23 countries, voted for the XC40 to win based on a wide range of criteria – design, comfort, safety, handling, economy, performance, functionality, environmental requirements, driver satisfaction and price – and the win was a first for Volvo in the competition’s 55 year history, although they had twice finished 3rd and been a runner-up in 2016 with the XC90.

The European Car of the Year award started in 1964 and has the aim to crown an overall and decisive winner regardless of the shape or size of the vehicle. The only requirements are the car must be available in at least 5 European countries and have projected sales of more than 5,000. Previous winners include the mk1 Ford Focus, the Fiat 500 and last year’s winner, the Peugeot 3008.

It’s been a great start to the year for Volvo, as the XC40 also won the WhatCar? 2018 Car of the Year award and the XC60 won the UK Car of the Year trophy. The XC40 is expected to be a huge hit despite a starting price of £28,000 putting it near the top of the medium-SUV range, alongside the Audi Q3 and Land Rover Discovery Sport. It will be one of the first cars available via Volvo’s new subscription service, Care by Volvo, which allows customers to swap vehicles or get the car serviced and cleaned with ease.

The first XC40 deliveries are set to be in May so it won’t be too long until UK customers can get their hands on one of the most well received cars of recent times. All eyes are now on the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and we may well see the 2019 Car of the Year being launched in the next couple of weeks. Next year’s winner will be tough to predict though as the new Ford Focus is due out soon, as well as the Jaguar E-Pace and next generation Mercedes A-Class.
